As our celebration of Independence Day, the 4th of July, quickly approaches, the City of Carmel reminds residents and visitors of the fireworks rules in Carmel. The City asks that appropriate safety precautions are followed so that everyone can have an enjoyable and safe holiday.
- Carmel City Ordinance requires that – Fireworks can only be used between 5 p.m. and midnight on June 29 & 30, July 1 – 3, and July 5 – 9. Hours are extended on July 4 so that fireworks can be used between 10 a.m. and midnight on that date only.
There is an increased danger of vegetation fires due to the lack of rain this year, so extra precautions need to be taken to ensure that grass or vegetation fires do not break out from sparks, cigarettes, cookouts or fireworks.
Fireworks will be displayed on Independence Day as the finale to the two-day CarmelFest celebration taking place on July 3 and 4, organized by the Rotary Club of Carmel. Extra precautions will be taken due to the dry conditions to ensure that the fireworks display is safely executed.
The fireworks will be staged just north of City Center in a gravel lot. Festival patrons are encouraged to get comfortable and watch the fabulous display planned this year. If you are wondering where to best view the fireworks, if you can see the blinking red light on the antennae near the Water Tower in Old Town, you should be able to see the fireworks.
Event organizers have gone to great lengths to locate the fireworks display in a location that best suits our need for viewing, safety, and mitigation of traffic control. By locating the display in a gravel lot, we can keep main roads open and affect very few businesses. This location is also easier to block off and keep pedestrians from coming too close to danger.
As in years past, the Carmel Fire Department will have fire trucks strategically placed during the display so firefighters can react quickly in the event of an emergency. We also have firefighters placed on roof tops and all around the immediate area to watch for any firework debris that might not extinguish before coming back down. The area of the Monon Greenway has the only vegetation in the immediate area, and due to the narrow design, it is relatively east to control if debris would land there. There is a specially equipped all-terrain vehicle on hand to quickly respond to any emergency along the Monon Greenway.
Also this year, fireworks will be visible from almost all areas of CarmelFest. However, spectators should avoid standing directly south (the fountain side) of the Steven Couts Fire Headquarters during the fireworks because they will not be able to see the show. People in the Gazebo area and the north side of the fire station headquarters should be able to see the show.
We urge you to attend the fireworks display during CarmelFest where safety and fun have come together in the best interest for everyone.
Other Area Fireworks
There are only three fireworks displays in Carmel that have been approved by the state of Indiana and by our Fire Marshal’s office.

- Page family fireworks on July 7 on the island around Lakeshore Dr.
- Seton Fest (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church) 106th and Haverstick on Aug. 3 and 4.
With the dry conditions, we are asking families not to take any chances with consumer fireworks. While controlled displays of fireworks use professionally trained people, and there have been steps taken to prevent accidents, fireworks that are randomly released into the air in many directions do pose a danger. The Carmel Fire Department urges citizens to please act responsibly and not take unnecessary risks.
