Attention history buffs! CarmelFest is featuring two days of historically accurate Civil War reenactments. There will be three military units (two Union and one Confederate), the 11th Indiana Infantry Zouaves, the 49th Indiana Infantry and the
Confederate 44th Tennessee Infantry. Also featured will be Union Paymaster Major Schnell, a civilian mortician and a historic weapons display by gunsmith Mike Marsh.
The programs at the campground start at 12:00 noon on Sunday with the placement of Pickets by the three military units and camp visits and displays through the day with Union vs Confederate skirmish at 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. That will be followed by President Abraham Lincoln visiting our camp from 5:00 p.m. until dusk. On Monday the soldiers will be in the morning parade followed by musket volleys until noon. There will be more camp visits, another Union vs. Confederate skirmish at 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. and President Lincoln will speak about the "recent battles" at Gettysburg and Vicksburg from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Monday. The event will feature an ongoing presentation by "mortician" Craig Malone and paymaster Joe Schnell. President Lincoln will be moving through the crowds both days.Â
The Civil War reenactment event is supported by the Carmel Clay Historical Society and the Carmel Civil War Roundtable.
