Many of Carmel's community members will be celebrating Earth Day in many ways, such as planting seeds, gearing up for Saturday's Carmel Utilities events, and working with local groups seeking to make Carmel an even more Earth-friendly community.
In honor of Earth Day, Pack 197’s Webelo Raven Patrol will rally their school, Prairie Trace Elementary, to reduce the use of plastic bags by 29,000 over the next year. Led by Sam Wittman, the eight scouts will distribute over 600 reusable shopping bags on April 22nd to the students and faculty, who have signed a pledge to use the bag at least once a week. The scouts’ project will teach students they can choose to reuse and reduce the drain on Earth’s non- renewable resources. Most importantly the scouts’ goal is to inspire students by proving small changes started by small people can have a big impact.
The Carmel Green Teen Micro-grant Program provided for this youth-led, environmental, community service project through Green Works Green Heroes Grant.
The Carmel Middle School Green Team will be giving away tree seedlings in celebration of Earth Day 2010. The two year old Red Maple, Black Chokeberry, and White Oak seedlings will be given away free at Carmel Middle School on April 22nd starting at 4:30. All Carmel residents are invited to stop in and pick up a tree and enter to win a Bird Habitat gift basket. Green Team members will be set up by the entry points for athletic events but sporting event tickets do not have to be purchased to get your tree.
On Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m., Carmel residents are invited to help make a difference by cleaning up trash at one of the following schools: Carmel High School, Creekside Middle School, and Carmel Middle School. All students and families are welcome. Elementary-aged students must be accompanied by an adult. Gathering locations: CHS: Meet at the XC Rock on the Trail of Tears; Creekside Middle: Meet on the grass by the pond just southeast of Creekside Middle School; Carmel Middle: Meet in the north end of the Carmel Middle School parking lot.
