Is Mass Transit in Carmel's future? Find out Nov. 8

Most residents have probably heard by now that Carmel was named #1 best place to live for cities our size. What many residents may not know is that thanks to Mayor Brainard's leadership in sustainability and energy conservation the City of Carmel was recently designated as a Green Community by the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. However, when you take a closer look to cities with which we compete, Carmel lacks in a very important area that will become more critical as the cost of energy continues to rise.  Investing in a robust mass transit system is one of the most important things we can do to build a sustainable community, secure long term economic growth in the Central Indiana region, and help secure America's energy future. But is a mass transit option in Carmel's future?

Restaurant Review: Matt the Miller's Tavern

Matt the Miller’s Tavern is the newest restaurant in the Carmel City Center.  It officially opened on Monday, Sept. 10, but was open by invitation the weekend before. We tried it twice - both times we were pleased with the quality and originality of the food, and delighted by the congenial atmosphere.

Carmel Pedals Bike Club Hopes to Connect Carmel

bike_tiresBy Bruce Kimball

Carmel Pedals was formed from an idea a few weeks ago at a Carmel "Tweet Up" held at Muldoon’s, where participants were asked what ideas they would like to see in Carmel.

Carmel is a bicycle friendly city and since May is bicycle month in the city, the discussion turned to how nice it would be if there was a weekday evening riding club so the occasional bicycle rider could just show up and ride with a group. There are a lot of bicycles hanging in garages and storage areas collecting dust.

Getting to Know You: Doreen Squire Ficara

doreenAroundCarmel recently caught up with Doreen Squire Ficara, the busy British lady who has done much to help Carmel grow its arts community. Perhaps influenced by her fellow countryman Charles Dickens, Doreen sees Carmel as a Tale of Two Cities – Carmel past and Carmel present.  In addition to her role as Executive Director of the Carmel Arts Council (CAC) and member of the Board of Trustees for the Booth Tarkington Theatre, she is the womanpower behind the bronze historical plaques that commemorate important landmarks of Carmel past.

CHS Students Initiate Water Savings Program at School

Tiffany_Wang2By Tiffany Wang

As the community becomes more environmentally aware, Alice Wang and I decided to pitch in and make a difference here in Carmel, Carmel High School to be exact.

We set out to determine what change would make the biggest impact. We identified our school’s biggest waste to be water and decided that the most beneficial change would be to install new low flow shower heads.

Green Tips

Save a Bird!  Save a Bee!  Plant Native Species!

Did you know that simply by planting native species in your yard, garden and landscaping, you can help reduce the impact suburban development has on Mother Nature?  Native species, unlike "exotic" plants from all corners of the world, provide food and habitat for countless birds, bugs, bees, and other species that keep Carmel a healthy place to live.  Most local critters can't eat imported plants.  Plus, many exotics become invasive since they have few or no natural enemies here.
